These included: Unplug an underused refrigerator; change the thermostat when you are away or asleep; activate your computer’s sleep mode, turn off the television when you are not watching it and to switch to efficient lightening.

2012 Smart Energy Summit to Address Energy Management Solutions
Green building and practices are rapidly gaining ground in the US, as evidenced by the Smart Energy Summit taking place next March in Austin. The Summit will address the value proposition of energy management solutions for operators, utilities and consumers.
Parks Associates, an international research firm, will address the ever growing market for energy management solutions at the third annual Smart Energy Summit: Engaging the Consumer. Verizon and Motorola will deliver a joint keynote speech, coinciding with Verizon’s recent announcement that it has hired its first chief of sustainability officer. Parks Associates will discuss their consumer research about energy usage and attitudes, as well as industry analysis on significant standards developments, like the Smart Energy profile (SEP 2.0). Their research shows that the percentage of U.S. households with some form of energy management network will rise from 2 percent in 2011 to 13 percent by 2015, propelled by the entry of major players into the green market, like Best Buy, AT&T, Verizon, ADT, and Motorola Mobility and new devices like the Nest, a smart thermostat designed to appeal to the iPhone generation.
Consumers drive demand, and the consumers are demanding that companies start taking more responsibility for the sustainability of the materials they use. “Consumer interest is driving growth – with 80% of U.S. households recently investing in some form of energy-related improvement for their home,” said Stuart Sikes, President of Parks Associates.
Green building is not only here to stay, it’s changing the way companies conduct business from start to finish. Steady Growth Expected in Building Automation Systems Market
The progressive, collective move towards green initiatives in every industry is giving way to a rapid expansion in the green building market. There is an increasing demand for energy-efficient lighting control solutions and building automation.
A new report by companiesandmarkets.com shows that the cost reduction benefits associated with the deployment of building automation and control systems are encouraging growth in the market. Two of the main driving forces behind this growth, which is expected to continue steadily over the reporting period, are safety and convenience; however, a lack of awareness of available technologies may restrain the market. “The future of the building automation and building control systems market may well be driven by the deployment of biometrics, which could enhance the security and safety features of existing and upcoming technologies,” reports MarketWatch.
The market for building automation systems has experienced a relatively slow growth, and has been impacted by the economic downturn. However, “recession and conflict always bring a re-evaluation of energy management and calls for new ways to ensure organizations and nations use energy more efficiently,” reports ABI Research. Because of this, the building automation systems market is expected to grow 3 percent globally from 2009 to 2015, when the total market is projected to reach a value of over $36 billion.
At Advanced Control Corporation, we have watched the market steadily increase even in today’s challenging times, an encouraging sign for the industry. Before it was “cool” to be “green”, ACC was developing environmentally-sound methods of building management and systems maintenance, and in doing so have become an industry leader. Advanced Control provides building automation in South Florida, as well as energy management, access control, CCTV solutions and more. For more information, call 954-491-6660 today.
New Miami Hotel Aims for LEED Certification
There’s more great news on the green building front in South Florida this week. The Sun-Sentinel recently reported that the Hampton Inn & Suites Miami Brickell-Downtown, set to open later this year, “is aiming to become the first new hotel in Miami certified under the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program.”
- The 221-room hotel will feature the following eco-friendly indoor features:
- An ozone laundry system designed to reduce the use of water, energy and cleaning chemicals
- Compact fluorescent lights and LED lighting to cut the use of electricity
- Low-flow water fixtures to trim water use
The Miami hotel would be just the third Hampton Inn in the world to obtain LEED approval, if certified. The 15-story hotel, under construction in Miami’s Brickell financial district, would also feature the following:
- Charging stations for electric cars
- Lights that automatically turn off when occupants leave a room
- A cistern to hold rainwater to use for irrigation
