Florida Town Recognized for Green Building Endeavors
Boynton Beach recently received national recognition for its green building efforts, winning the title of “Multi-Family Project of the Year” for its Seabourn Cove apartment complex. The award, part of the National Association of Home Builders’ (NAHB) Green Awards, was presented in recognition of Seabourn Cove’s contribution to “Greening the American Dream”. The 23-acre Seabourn Cove complex, with 456 units, is the one of the largest multifamily projects to receive that title; it is also the first in the U.S. to achieve gold level in the Home Innovation NGBS Green Certification Program. IKEA Builds South Florida’s Largest Solar Energy
When Swedish home furnishing retailer IKEA plugged in South Florida’s largest solar energy system earlier this year in Sunrise, it became the state’s largest non-utility solar owner. The Sunrise project joined two other IKEA solar arrays already operational in South Florida, in Orlando and Tampa. IKEA has a long-standing commitment to sustainable energy practices, readily demonstrated by its global allocation of $1.8 billion to invest in renewable energy over the next two years, and the myriad other conservation measures it has implemented in its buildings here and around the world. Platinum LEED Building Gives the Homeless a New Home
New hope and healthy living areas were given to the homeless in Los Angeles with the opening of Step Up on Vine, which will provide permanent supportive housing for the chronically homeless. Monday night President Bill Clinton and Kobe Bryant hosted a private reception to celebrate the unveiling of the Platinum LEED certified building. The building, retrofitted by two non-profit housing developers, Step Up on Second and Hollywood Community Housing Corporation (HCHC), is part of the Step Up in Hollywood campaign to end homelessness by acquiring, developing and operating 200 LEED-certified permanent supportive home units by 2014.
